Cat Ba Island 2026: A Guide from Hanoi-Based Locals
Content summary
Cat Ba Island has two sides. One is the postcard side, limestone karst formations, quiet bays, and the soft green of Lan Ha Bay at sunrise. The other is unexpected, a small island that somehow holds a real travel scene with beach days, slow seafood dinners, and late nights that don’t end where you think they will.
This is not a listing page. We run hostels in Hanoi and Cat Ba, and our crew lives on the island, so what you are about to read is the version of Cat Ba we share with our own guests. Honest tips, real spots, and the kind of detail you only get when you actually live somewhere.
In this 2026 guide, we will walk you through everything you need to plan a real trip. How to get there from Hanoi, when to go, what to do, where to spend your evenings, where to stay, where to eat, and which local spots most visitors completely miss. If you are coming to Vietnam this year and Cat Ba is on your list, this is the only guide you need.
Is Cat Ba Worth It, and How Does It Compare to Halong Bay?
Short answer: yes, with a few honest conditions.
Cat Ba is worth your time if you want a slower, more independent version of the Halong Bay region. You can still see the famous karst seascape, but instead of being on a cruise schedule, you stay on land, rent a motorbike, sleep in your own room, and decide your own pace. That freedom is the real reason people fall for the island. It is less worth the trip if you only have one night in northern Vietnam, or if you are looking for a five star resort experience.

How it compares to Halong Bay: Halong Bay is a cruise destination, you sleep on the boat and follow a fixed route. Cat Ba is an island destination, you stay on land and choose your own pace. Lan Ha Bay, which surrounds Cat Ba, is essentially Halong Bay without the crowds. Same limestone formations, same emerald water, far fewer tourists.
Our honest recommendation: if you have the time, do both. A short Halong Bay day cruise followed by 2 to 3 nights on Cat Ba gives you the best of each. If you can only choose one, Cat Ba gives you more freedom for the same budget.
How to Get to Cat Ba from Hanoi
This is where most planning headaches happen, so we will keep it simple. There are three main ways to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba, and the right one depends on your budget and how much time you want to spend in transit.
Option 1: Bus and ferry combo (most popular)
This is the route most backpackers take. You catch a sleeper bus or limousine van from Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the bus takes you to Got Harbor, and from there a ferry brings you to Cat Ba Island. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours including the ferry crossing. Price is usually 250,000 to 350,000 VND one way depending on the operator. It is the cheapest option and the easiest to book from any hostel or hotel in Hanoi.
Option 2: Private transfer (fastest comfort)
If you are traveling as a couple or small group, a private transfer is worth considering. A private car or van picks you up from your hotel in Hanoi, drives you to the ferry port, and arranges your crossing. You arrive faster and without the stop and go of a shared bus. Expect to pay between 1,500,000 and 2,500,000 VND for the vehicle, which works out well if you split it between 3 or 4 people.
Option 3: Bus and speedboat
For travelers who want the fastest possible journey, the speedboat option cuts the ferry time significantly. Total travel time drops to around 3.5 hours. Price sits between the basic bus and the private transfer.
Coming from Quiri Hostel Hanoi
If you are staying with us in the Old Quarter, our front desk team books all three options directly. We work with operators we trust, which means no waiting at random pickup points and no last-minute price changes. Just tell us your preferred travel day and budget, and we will set it up.
Coming back from Cat Ba to Hanoi
The same routes work in reverse. Most ferries depart Cat Ba between early morning and mid-afternoon, so plan your last day accordingly. If you need to catch an evening flight from Noi Bai Airport, give yourself a full day for the return journey to be safe.
Flying into Hanoi first? Check our airport transfer guide before you book anything.
Best Time to Visit Cat Ba
Cat Ba has two clear seasons, and they offer very different experiences.
May to September (peak season): This is when the island comes alive. Beaches are open, boat tours run full schedules, and the nightlife scene is at its busiest. Temperatures sit between 28 and 33 degrees Celsius, the water is warm, and most restaurants and bars are operating at full hours. The trade-off is that July and August can get crowded with domestic tourists, especially on weekends.
October to April (off-season): Cooler, quieter, and more atmospheric. Some beach venues and seasonal restaurants close or reduce hours, but the island feels more local. December and January can be cold and grey, so pack layers. March and April are underrated months, the weather warms up and you get the island almost to yourself.
If you want our honest pick, late April through early June is the sweet spot. Warm enough to swim, not yet crowded, and most places are open. We recommend at least 2 nights on the island, three is ideal.
For trip planning, our Ha Giang Loop rainy season guide covers the same season logic for the northern mountains if you are combining destinations.
Things to Do on Cat Ba

Cat Ba is small enough to explore in a few days, but there is more to do here than most travelers expect. We have grouped the main activities by what kind of day you are looking for.
Nature
- Cat Ba National Park. Trekking trails, viewpoints, and the chance to spot the endangered Cat Ba langur. The classic hike takes around 2 to 3 hours.
- Lan Ha Bay. Boat tours, kayaking, swimming in hidden coves. This is the highlight of Cat Ba for most visitors.
- Monkey Island. A small island with a viewpoint, a quiet beach, and yes, monkeys. Easy half-day trip.
Adventure
- Rock climbing. Cat Ba is one of the best deep water solo climbing spots in Southeast Asia.
- Kayaking. Self-guided or guided through Lan Ha Bay’s lagoons and caves.
- Motorbike loop. A scenic ride that takes you around the island in 3 to 4 hours with stops.
- Trekking. Beyond the national park, several quieter routes lead through farming villages.
Culture
- Cannon Fort. Historic site with one of the best panoramic views of the island and Lan Ha Bay.
- Cat Ba Town. Walk the harbor, watch fishing boats come in, browse the small night market.
- Local seafood markets. Best in the early morning, especially if you want to see how the day’s catch arrives.
Relax
- Beach time. Cat Co 1, 2, and 3, plus quieter spots we will cover below.
- Boat day trips. Half-day or full-day cruises through Lan Ha Bay.
- Sunset viewing. Several spots around the island catch the evening light beautifully.
For booking tours, our partner Cat Ba Expedition handles most of the routes mentioned above.
Cat Ba Beaches and Lan Ha Bay

The main beaches near Cat Ba Town are Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, and Cat Co 3, all connected by a short cliff walk. Cat Co 1 is the most developed, Cat Co 2 is the most popular for swimming, and Cat Co 3 is quieter and surrounded by resorts.
Lan Ha Bay is the real star. It is essentially Halong Bay’s quieter, more local sibling. The same limestone formations, the same emerald water, but far fewer cruise ships. The standard boat tour from Cat Ba runs around 4 to 6 hours and typically includes kayaking, swimming, and a seafood lunch. Prices in 2026 sit between 400,000 and 600,000 VND per person for a group tour.
If a beach day is on your list, you will want to think about how to round it off. A long swim, a slow lunch, and then somewhere to land in the evening for a drink with sea views. Which brings us to the nightlife.
Cat Ba Nightlife: Beach Clubs, Bars, and Late Nights
Cat Ba’s nightlife is small but real. You will not find Bangkok or Saigon energy here, and that is part of the charm. What you will find is a tight scene of beach venues, bars, and hostel rooftops that all sit within a short walk or scooter ride of each other.
Beach clubs in Cat Ba
Beach clubs as a category are new to Cat Ba. The island has had restaurants and bars near the water for years, but the cocktail and DJ format is just starting to land in 2026.
Quiri Beach Club (opening June 1, 2026)

We are opening Quiri Beach Club on Cat Ba Xanh Island on June 1, 2026, and it is built around an idea Cat Ba has not really seen before. By day it runs as a beach bar with cocktails, seafood, and an open-air layout that catches the sea breeze. At 9pm, it turns into something else. DJs come on, dancers come in, the lights drop, and the space becomes the kind of club night you would expect in Saigon or Bangkok, on the sand.
The music rotation is part of the concept. Monday to Friday leans European, with hip hop, reggae, and techno sets aimed at the international backpacker crowd. Fridays and Saturdays shift Vietnamese and young, which gives the weekend a totally different energy and brings the local scene in alongside travelers.
Food is the other side of it. We are taking familiar dishes, a bacon burger for example, and reworking them with local ingredients and our own twist. Quick to serve, but never quick on flavor.
Expect regular events, free beer hours, and a launch night you will hear about before you arrive. We open the doors on June 1, 2026. If you want to be first through, drop us a message or watch this space.
Bars in Cat Ba Town
Cat Ba Town has a small but loyal bar scene. A few backpacker bars sit along the harbor strip, with cheap beer, simple cocktails, and the usual late-night travel crowd. Oasis Bar is one of the long-standing spots that most visitors end up at one evening. Beyond that, the bar scene rotates seasonally, so ask at your hostel for the current pick.
Live music and DJ nights
The DJ and club scene on Cat Ba is small but growing. Quiri Beach Club becomes the most consistent option once it opens on June 1, 2026, with a different music style each night and weekend events that pull in both travelers and locals. Beyond that, a few smaller venues run occasional DJ nights, especially during high season from May to September. Weekends are when the scene actually wakes up, so plan a Friday or Saturday night if music matters to you.
Where backpackers hang out
Hostel rooftops are still the heart of the backpacker scene. Most hostels run their own bar with happy hour deals, beer pong, and group dinners that flow into the night. Quiri Hotel Cat Ba is one of these spots, and we keep our rooftop open late on weekends.
Where to Stay on Cat Ba
Cat Ba’s accommodation scene splits into a few clear categories. Here is what each one looks like in 2026 and who they work best for.
Backpacker hostels
This is where the island’s social scene lives. Hostels on Cat Ba tend to have rooftop bars, group activities, and easy-to-book tours, which makes them a great pick if you are traveling solo or want to meet people.
If you want the same social energy but prefer a private room and hotel-style comfort, our own Quiri Hotel Cat Ba sits in this category. We built it to feel like a community space, not just a place to sleep, and we keep prices fair for backpackers who want a bit more privacy.
Mid-range hotels
For travelers who want privacy and comfort without resort prices, mid-range hotels in Cat Ba Town offer clean rooms, air conditioning, and easy access to the harbor and restaurants. Usually around 600,000 to 1,200,000 VND per night.
Boutique stays
A handful of small boutique hotels have opened in the last few years, mostly along the coast or just outside town. Quieter, more design-focused, and good for couples or short escapes.
Beachfront options
If you want to wake up close to the sand, look at properties around Cat Co 2 and Cat Co 3. Higher prices, but you trade the town buzz for direct beach access.
Where to Eat on Cat Ba

Cat Ba is a fishing island, and seafood is everywhere. Here is how to think about meals through the day.
Breakfast
Coffee shops and small breakfast spots open early along the harbor. Pho, bun cha, and Vietnamese coffee are easy to find. If you are staying at Quiri Hotel Cat Ba, our restaurant serves a full breakfast menu including local and Western options. We are putting together a full breakfast guide for Cat Ba soon, and we will link it here when it goes live. If you are also visiting Hanoi, our Hanoi breakfast guide covers the city’s best morning spots.
Lunch and seafood
This is where Cat Ba shines. The floating restaurants in Cat Ba’s harbor serve some of the freshest seafood in northern Vietnam. Look for the smaller, busier spots where locals eat. Squid, prawns, scallops, and grouper are all worth ordering.
Dinner and local favorites
In the evening, the area around 1/4 Street fills up with small restaurants, both Vietnamese and international. Look for Vietnamese hot pot, bun rieu, and grilled seafood platters. Vegetarian options have improved a lot since 2024, and Vietnamese tofu and vegetable dishes are easy to find almost everywhere.
Local Spots Most Tourists Miss

This is the section we are proudest of. These spots came directly from our team, people who live and work on Cat Ba and have spent years finding the corners of the island that most tour itineraries skip.
Bãi biển Chút Chít
A small beach tucked away from the main Cat Co stretch, mostly visited by locals and a few in-the-know travelers. The water is calm, the crowd is light, and it is the kind of place where you can spread out a towel and not see anyone for hours. Worth the short trip out from town if you want a slower beach day.
Storland Beach
Honestly one of the most underrated spots on Cat Ba. It sits surprisingly close to the center of the island, but somehow most tourists never end up here. What makes it special is the community feeling. Locals come here to relax, and they often clean up the trash themselves because there is no formal service that maintains it. If you visit, please leave it cleaner than you found it. This is the kind of place that stays beautiful because the people who use it care about it.
Sunset on the Sea
A quiet viewpoint along the coast, perfect for the late afternoon. As the name suggests, this is one of the best sunset spots on Cat Ba, and because it is small and off the main routes, you usually have the place mostly to yourself. Bring a drink, a friend, and a camera.
Our team would also tell you the same thing we are telling you now: these spots stay good because the people who visit treat them well. Cat Ba is a small island, and small islands feel everything.
Practical Tips for First-Timers
A few things our guests wish they had known before arriving.
- Cash. Bring enough VND for your stay. ATMs exist in Cat Ba Town but can be unreliable, and many smaller spots are cash only.
- Motorbike rental. Easy to find, usually 150,000 to 200,000 VND per day. Make sure you have an international driving permit and check the bike before you ride off.
- Safety. Cat Ba is one of the safer destinations in Vietnam. Use standard travel sense, especially around the harbor late at night.
- Opening hours. Most venues close between 11pm and 1am. Plan late evenings around the spots that actually stay open.
- Solo travelers. Cat Ba is one of the easiest places in Vietnam to meet other backpackers. Stay at a social hostel, join a group boat tour, and you will not be alone for long.
